After reading “A Raisin in the Sun” I realized all the characters have a common goal to improving their quality of life, essentially its about their dreams and how they deal with the oppression circumstances that run their lives. Hansberry uses stage directions to set up our expectations of what will happen in the play by giving us a sense the plays setting is in a lower class south side of chicago in the 1950’s. You also notice that the apartment is small and roach infested so you have an idea of their living situations. The characters are different but their goals remain the same. Walter wants to be a rich white class man. His sister has different values and dreams of becoming a doctor. The mother is conservative and wants to invest in the husband’s insurance in hoping to owning her own home. Hansberry created the American dream, A working family aiming for a better way of life.

Hansberry uses stage directions to set up our expectations for what will happen in the play and what the characters are like by having the character join the conversation at certain times. The Youngers are a poor African American family that want to make a living. Walter and Beneatha, all have a plan to spend the money that’s on the cheque. Walter wants to have a liquor store. Beneatha wants to spend the money for her medical school. Walter and Beneatha have an argument for who should get the money and for what reason.

After finishing “Benito Cereno” Herman Melville depiction of slavery was that he believed in abolition. He wanted slavery to stop because of how it impacted the African Americans. The novella depicts enslavement in both positive and negative lights. It depicts enslavement in a positive light because it talks about how the slaves wanted their freedom. It also depicts enslavement in a negative light because it talks about how they are afraid of them revolting in a violent way. I sympathize the slaves in the conclusion of the story because the slaves were driven out of their homes and away from their families and were in a boat against their will.  Delano’s blindness resulted in him not knowing what the danger is. This is because he believed that he had a lot of power.

In chapter 6 of “Narrative” by Jonathan Culler, it tells us how the plot has a major impact in the story. According to the article, Aristotle says “that the plot is the most basic feature of narrative, that good stories must have a beginning, middle, and an end.” The plot is what changes an event from good to bad. Based on where the plot starts it will decide how the story will change.

In Chapter 5 of “Rhetorical, Poetics, and Poetry the author uses metaphors. According to the article it states “a metaphor treats something as something else.” This rhetorical figure helps readers understand what their reading.

In the poem “Diving Into The Wreck” by Adrianne Rich included a metaphor to compare one thing to another. The metaphor was “the thing I came for: the wreck and not the story of the wreck the thing itself and not the myth. This is a metaphor because it is comparing between the real life and the news that we are told by other people. The character wants to experience the wreck, she doesn’t want to told about it. She wants to know for herself.

The article “Language, Meaning, Interpretation” by Jonathan Culler tells us many ways to define the meaning of language. For example, a poem is hard to read because it is not easy to break down the meaning of the words. In my opinion the longer the poem the harder it is to break the words down. Also, poem can have different meaning which can confuse the reader.

In chapter 2 when the author talked about fiction it stood out to me. The reason why is because fiction has so many details to it. Fiction can make things that happen in your imagination come to life in writing. It takes a lot of creativity to make fiction books. Fiction can also have more possibilities because it doesn’t have a limit.

After reading the first 10 pages I learned that literature has many ways to describe itself and it has many definitions to it. I find it interesting how there are many forms of literature such as poems, plays, stories, and nonfiction.

Q: Why are their so many forms of literature?

Below you will find two things to consider for this blog post. Let me know if they are unclear. Also, don’t forget to respond to at least one classmate’s post.

  1. In the first 10 pages of this chapter, Jonathan Culler outlines the question he asks in the chapter’s title: What is literature, and does it matter? What, according to you, is the most important aspect of this section of the chapter? Why is it important for thinking about definitions of literature?

– In the chapters, Johnathan Culler what he stated is really Important because of whom they’re stating about in the topic and the mind behind the work, the author wanted to bring this important part of the literature in the chapters as in-play/poem.

  1. Write one question that stayed with you as you read this chapter.

        – I have one question in mind is that why does reading literature or nonliterature cab affect human beings?

In the play, “The Raisin in the Sun” by Hansberry, he has tried to create a plot that will give a proper understanding of each character’s current status. He uplifted the tragic story of people’s lives during racial segregation and what are the difficulties they had to face. The plot is centred around the story of the character Walter and his family, and the hard times they were facing in their society due to their skin colour. The family was struggling with the financial statement since they did not get enough opportunity in their society. Walter was a selfish person and he always believed that money will cover the gap between white and black people in society. He does not take any responsibility for his family members and his mother has to do the hard work for the family to provide a good house for them. At the end of the story, Walter realizes that money will not buy him status and pride in society and money is not the most important thing in this world.
