Hansberry uses stage directions to set up our expectations for what will happen in the play and what the characters are like by having the character join the conversation at certain times. The Youngers are a poor African American family that want to make a living. Walter and Beneatha, all have a plan to spend the money that’s on the cheque. Walter wants to have a liquor store. Beneatha wants to spend the money for her medical school. Walter and Beneatha have an argument for who should get the money and for what reason.
