- In chapter 2 by Jonathan Culler, literacy helps us to understand the story on a historical basis. Literature is not an easier word to explain. But, the author mentions examples by explaining the difference between words and the important meaning in certain texts. Culler accepts that history has molded the definition so that it applies to a larger number of types of composing than simply account and true to life, rather any bit of composing with a structure, and a natural capacity to be dissected could be viewed as a literacy work. That is harder to perceive, the same number of them are general, as expressed already. Scholarly Shows are surely a quality that separates writing from different types of composing. Culler reasons that how you compose a work is similarly as significant as the substance. The idea of writing is likewise significant, due to their interesting structure and capacity numerous kinds of verses are immediately unmistakable; this makes the writing. However, Literature can likewise be stylishly satisfying; individuals frequently banter about the excellence of the writing word. Culler closes the part by reminding the peruser that researchers look at the idea of writing to all the more likely sharpen the devices of their exchange, and know the medium with which they accomplish their work. I believe that addressing writing assists perusers with bettering comprehend the idea of inventiveness and their own capacity to communicate.
- One question that stayed in my mind while reading – Why is historical literacy important?

What is literature and does it matter?
- After I read the chapter “What is literature and does it matter?” by Johnathan Culler, in my opinion, the most significant aspect of this section is that we should not look through non-literary works with colored eyes, and both literary and non-literary works need to be treated equally. To some extent, they all function well to express and convey authors’ feelings and thoughts. Alike Culler has discussed in the very beginning of the section, “For students and teachers of literature today, there is a whole range of critical projects, topics to read and write about- such as ‘images of women in the early 20th century’-where you can deal with both literary and non-literary works”. It indicates that nowadays, universities carry out the model that combines literary works with non-literary works to explain literature related problems. In the modern time, the primary work we keep in touch with is non-literary works since it makes more senses for us to understand compared with literary works. Moreover, Culler also addresses that to some extent, non-literary texts will be transformed into literary works. He took an sentence from a philosophy book, “A curious thing/about the ontological problem is its/simplicity.” Even though the essence of this sentence is not considered as literary work, it still attracts attentions due to an interest in the word, their relations to each other, etc. As far as I am concerned, it is vital to think of the definition of literature since it is everywhere in our lives. We can find it no matter where we go. Even a small piece of text will have chance to be considered as literature even though the essence of it is not.
2. When I went through the first pages of this chapter, the question which always stays with me is that “What distinguishing characteristics can distinguish works known as literary from those are non-literary?”

“What is literature and does it matter?”
- After reading chapter 2 “What is literature and does it matter?” by Jonathan Culler. I think the main important part is not to judge the difference within non-literature and literature. I think that literature is the improvement of what people think. When I read this chapter I found the most important part which was the Culler mentions that “we can think of literary works as a language with particular properties or feature, and we can think of literature as the product of conventions and a certain kind of attention.” Culler discusses here that what makes readers treat literature in a special site, also we might lose a lot of the culture without literature. I believe that non-literature texts are kind of easier of reader to easily understand what is the texts about. On the other side literary text includes searching for ideas etc. which is totally different. I think we don’t need to complected our life, what we have to do that we need to choose how easily we can gain knowledge and understand everything. I think we must learn both literature and non-literary text to analyze when we need it. So, I think it will help us to develop our language barrier and improve analyzing. Also, we can gain knowledge to deal with literary and non-literary which can help us to better understand everything.
- Now, a question that stayed with me as I read this chapter was ” What is necessary to judge between literary and non-literary?” also, “What is the importance between literary and non-literary for human life?”

- After I read chapter II what is literature and does it matter? from Jonathan Culler. For me, I think the important thing is not to define the difference between literature and non-literature. I think they all work as language tools to record and express people’s thoughts so the most important aspect of this section was the Culler mentions literature “ the function in special ways because of the special attention they receive.” Culler discusses what makes readers treat literature in a special site. I think non-literature texts are easier for readers to understand and read. Whether in school or in life we learn most about non-literature texts. Universities choose non-literature texts to explain philosophy, historicity, instrumentation, and commodity. I don’t think we must choose any particular learning style. What we need is how to master knowledge and understanding more easily. I think we need to analyze when we need to use literature and when we need to use non-literature. I think just like Culler mentioned literature makes people ponder and query about certain things so I think literature is much more compelling in particular speeches and citations. Thus we can deal with both literary and non-literary work to gain information.
2. The question that stays with me as I read this chapter was, “What kind of essential to define whether it is literary or non-literary?”

- Culler questions what is literature and does it matter? Culler defines literature in many different ways. For instance, Culler says “literature comes in all shapes and sizes, and most of them seem to have more in common with works that aren’t usually called literature”. The author draws a parallel between Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre an autobiography and a poem by Robert Burns called ‘My love is like a red, red rose’. The author makes this point to make us, the reader question what we call literature and why we treat something as literature. I found the most important aspect of this section of the chapter is the comparison to weeds and literature. Culler mentions that “Weeds are simply plants that gardeners don’t want in their gardens” so there is no clear cut definition for weeds similar to literature. It is important for us to think about the definitions of literature because it’s important to question something that surrounds us on a daily basis. Especially when it comes down to what we consider literature and not.
- A question that stayed with me as I was reading this chapter was “what differentiates literature from other human activities and pastimes?”.
