After finished reading Benito Cereno,  I found that Herman Melville has clearly depicted the enslavement towards the positive note. I feel really happy to know that, Herman Melville has truly speake about the slavery in his novel on back in time. He try to see people equally in his  novel. Melville shows that how the slaves have to serve their masters and make them happay in any manners, but in return slaves always receive the crulity. As Benito Cereno was a Rebellion for those slave on the board  try to stop the whole confusion but  instead , he had to suffer physically and emotionally and moreover he has been killed for no reason. Inaddition, Bebo was the character that  try to prove black people also capable and strong in doing things as compared to the white people but unfortunately had to die. So I wanted to sympathized to Bebo for his rebellion for the freedom, who just want to go back to his home. His death is a tregedy. In this novel, Delano’s blindness  has shown us the existences of ignorance on back in time of slavery. I believe that in any sitution voice should be raised if it is wrong and that voice will turn into the insperation for all people to fight back for their freedom.

In chapter 6 “Narrative” by Jonathan culler has discussed the essential parts of any story and that is the plot and discourse. He says that the plot is a story having the beginning, middle, and ending with the ordering.  but the discourse is how it delivered, like the selection of style to present.

A movie called ” The Giver ” originally taken from the novel “The Giver ” by Lois Lowry. The story tells that the artificial society, where there is no pain, violence, and no problems. Only the perfect society but there is a giver who holds the power to see beyond and ordinary people can not see. And the giver is trying to bring the truth that there is more to see than this artificial perfect society. At last, the giver managed to help the people to see the beyond and make a feel of living and enjoying what nature offers to them. After reading chapter 6 “Narrative”  I analyze this movie. I find that the movies have their beginning, middle, and perfect ending. I like the style of the author how he takes the story smoothly from beginning to end.

Culler has mentioned that the narrative gives pleasure to its people and hold their attention by giving a new twist to a familiar situation.  In addition, the pleasure of the narrative is linked to desire. stories help people to gain knowledge of its surrounding as well as the whole world. Stories help us to see reality and what’s happing in the world.

In chapter 5, Jonathan Culler has described the importance of both poetry and rhetoric, which are totally different from each other, and also how they are connected to each other. There are a few important rhetorical figures, where some theorists believe that is important in both rhetoric and poetry. These are metaphor, metonymy, synecdoche, and irony. Among this technique, I personally believe that irony is an interesting technique that is used in the poem.

For example, in the poem called “The Sea is History” the First stanza and the second line where they have used the word “Sirs”, which is actually plural forms, means must be more than one voice indicate of being two males in the poem, with a little use of Irony.

In chapter 4 “Language, Meaning, and Interpretation” by Jonathan Culler, I have noticed that language is the key that connects people. In this chapter, I find Language and Thought are very interesting. It has shown how language is the medium for expressing the actual thought of the people. Language differs from people to people according to the surrounding. I speak Nepali and it is just the way to express my thought. So, I know that it does not matter at all what medium you choose, the only matter is thoughts. But ‘natural’ or ‘normal’ language we choose, where we don’t need to make more effort to express our thought but if it is different, then it is difficult in expressing actual thoughts. Language may be different, but the thought is centered and willing to express within the same set of surroundings. Hence, Literature is so important and make people active and educate in the different setting of the language in expressing the actual thought of people in a different surrounding.

Reading chapter II, “What is literature and does it matter?” by Jonathan Culler. From my point of view, I  find  “Literature as aesthetic object” very interesting because I believe that it helps us to know about the artistic expressions in our society. I come to that it helps to generate interconnection to the words and content.  According to Kant and other theorists, for them, the aesthetic object is ‘purposiveness without purpose ‘ mean not all the stories are purposeful but can have a range of effects. Reading this I realize that the knowledge of beauty depends on the knowledge of objects in which beauty is experienced.

While reading chapter II what is Literature and Does it matter? By Jonathan Culler, I believe that the most important aspect is when Culler shows the distinction between literature and not-literary. I come to know that literature is not only the words that simply written but it has a separate quality which makes it different and valuable attention. Some of the good literature ‘My  Love is like a red, red rose’ a poem by Robert Burns, and ‘Hamlet’  a play by William Shakespeare that distinguishes from songs and autobiographies.  And also I come to know how the content is very important, in the same way, it is important that how you write a work.  Even the literature has the quality of creating the fiction world, that takes the reader in the imaginary world to narrate the work done. Moreover, literature has the quality of encouraging creative thought that makes people politeness and educated. In addition, literature helps people understand their thoughts and how to express their thoughts in front of the world.

After reading this chapter, only the Question that comes in my mind is what role literature can play in the real life of a person? Can we ignore the literature?
